Leadership, just like company culture, starts from the inside out. It starts with believing in ourselves and our abilities to grow not just ourselves, but our businesses.
If we want to truly upgrade our businesses, it starts with upgrading ourselves.
But how do we do that? What does it look like to take action to become a stronger leader and step into our power?
We invited one of our favorite speakers and inspirational humans, Angus Nelson, onto Magnet Marketers to discuss what it means to upgrade yourself in order to upgrade your life.
Angus is a man on a mission. He’s a high-performance coach for men, one of America’s top performance strategists, and Founder of Evolve Men Coaching.
Angus takes years of best practices from advising Fortune 500 leaders to help ambitious men create more freedom, fulfillment, and focused intent so that they can make the impact in the world they were designed for.

Embracing Failure:
The first part of stepping into your power is all about embracing failure. It’s about shifting the way we see failure and recognizing that the problems that we have in our businesses are reflective of the problems that we have in our lives.
Anytime we fail, it’s a true opportunity to look at ourselves and make a change. When we fail, we learn what not to do and how we can show up better the next time.
Failure is a positive thing because it’s the only way we actually become better versions of ourselves. If we never recognized our failure, we’d never see where we can improve.
The Power Of Energy:
There is no doubt that like attracts like. The energy, intention, and limiting beliefs that we bring to the table influence the way our companies are able to grow.
When we show up as our fullest self - from an energy of abundance - and bring that energy into every interaction and engagement, we attract the right people into our lives in the form of teammates, clients, community members, and friends.
When we show up without intention - from an energy of lack or desperation - and bring that energy with us, we sabotage our interactions and engagements.
If you start any business interaction with a push for sales, you’ll never get the sale. As Angus said, people can smell your sales breath and nobody likes it. We all know that icky feeling and we resist it.
This is the power of energy; you’re either coming from a place of lack or abundance and it shapes both how you show up and how people respond to you.
If you want to upgrade yourself, the gremlins in your head have to be contextualized and conquered.
What It Looks Like To Upgrade Yourself:
By conquering our limiting beliefs, we have the ability to step into our power and come from a place of abundance, gratitude, and lightness. This energy is refreshing and attractive; it's what makes people want to have a conversation with you.
When we come from this kind of energy, we radiate an indescribable beauty of giving and serving. This kind of energy is infectious; it can be felt by everyone around us.
Stepping into your power creates an energy that is contagious; your team and clients start to feel it.
How To Get Started:
If you want to start to upgrade yourself, you have to be willing to do the hard work.
Here are a number of things that Angus recommends you do to get started:
Get Super Honest:
Most people don’t have the self-awareness to see their own blind spots. Everyone needs someone outside of themselves to provide feedback and perspective.
Because you live inside of your own head, just like everyone else, you’re blind to the stories that you tell yourself and the pitfalls you often fall into.
If you want to change your reality, you need someone to help you find your superpowers AND kryptonite areas - aka someone that will speak the truth to you.
Practice Awareness:
If you want to become more self-aware, practice awareness in the form of emotional check-ins. Take the time to turn inward the next time you’re feeling stressed or anxious and dig a little beyond the surface to find out what’s causing that feeling.
Become diligent about noticing when your fears pop up and/or when you’re chasing shiny objects. These behaviors are a product of your belief system.
A lot of times, our subconscious tries to keep us safe because on the outside of our comfort zone and everything we know is the feeling of risk.
It can be tremendously scary to up-level; your “stuff” will try to hold you back and come up with stories to trick your brain into believing you’re not capable.
The reality is that skills and talents can be developed but until you believe that you have something special to offer, you’ll be stuck.
That’s why you have to do the work to re-align your stories.
Re-Align Your Stories:
At the core of greatness is the belief that you can achieve what you dream of.
Re-aligning your stories means making the effort to read books and surround yourself with people that elevate how you see yourself, your capabilities, and the world at large.
It’s about finding content that allows you to re-wite your brain and your belief system so that you understand that you belong. It’s about talking to people that remind you that you can do hard things.
Sometimes re-aligning our stories means re-aligning our circle, because we become who we surround ourselves with.
When you stop trying to be small to fit into someone else’s box and start building your own box, you know you’ve aligned your stories.
Choose Yourself:
There’s a myth in our world that we’re waiting for someone to pick or choose what we are capable of but the reality is that we are our only blockage and wall between where we are and where we want to be.
You have the power to change your world.
You don’t have to listen to the news. You don’t have to be friends with the same people you were 5 years ago.
You get to decide what you do, how you’re going to show up, and the way you’re going to impact the world. It’s ALL up to you.
Putting It All Together:
At the end of the day, we are what we think. When we learn to step into our power and re-wire our brains to understand just how truly capable we are, we create a ripple effect of empowerment around us.
By taking the time to understand ourselves and tap into our deepest desires, we have the ability to truly change the world.
If you’re looking to get started with this empowerment work, we recommend checking out Angus Nelson’s website and following him on social media.
