A major update to WordPress was just released yesterday, December 6, 2018. The reason we are letting you know this is because it comes with one of the biggest changes to WordPress to date, Gutenberg Editor. Fear not, because we have you covered.
The new Gutenberg Editor in WordPress 5.0 will be replacing the familiar “What You See Is What You Get” (WYSIWYG) editor with a new editor based on the concept of “blocks” within the editor. As with any WordPress update, especially one of this magnitude, there is the potential for certain parts of your site to break after the update.
Here’s a blog explaining Gutenberg in more depth.
If you are not well versed in technology, you’ll want to consult with an expert before updating to WordPress 5.0. The new Gutenberg Editor will be very different than the current editor. It may even cause issues with your current theme. It’s also important to make sure you have a backup of your site done before updating, just in case something goes wrong with the update.
If you aren't comfortable jumping into a new work environment, there is a plugin that will be available officially supported by WordPress called the Classic Editor. For anyone updating to WordPress 5.0, we recommend installing this plugin just for safety reasons. With this plugin installed you will have the option to edit your post in the "Classic Editor" or in the new "Gutenberg Editor."
Some of you are comfortable working on your sites and updating by yourself. However, even if you regularly update your own pages or posts, you might want to consult a professional before diving in. This update is very different than anything that has come before, so it’s hard to predict what will happen to each individual site. While it’s unlikely the update will break anything major, it is a good idea to have someone on standby just in case something goes wrong. At NOW Marketing Group, we are always here to help so please don't hesitate to reach out if you would like some guidance as you update.
That may have sounded scary! Don’t worry, it’s not. This is an exciting update that is aiming to make the editing process a little easier for everyone. We encourage you to embrace this change and welcome Gutenberg. As always, updating is important and will mean a faster, more secure site.
