Company culture is more than just a trendy buzz-worthy term of the moment. More and more job seekers are placing a higher value on the culture of their potential work place than before.

What impacts company culture?
Environment, values, employee morale… all of these play a part, but you can’t just toss all your eggs in one basket. There needs to be a happy mix of all these to drive a positive company culture.

One huge component of employing a positive company culture, is the foundation on which the company was built. I’m not referring to your client base, but the values and mission in which you instill into your business. We have talked before about the 3 C’s - Culture, Character & Creativity, and this fits right into what we have shared. Some of the best places to work are those businesses where they have a defined set of values. Sharing them upfront with your team and your clients could possibly set you apart from another business trying to win that employee or land the same client you are pitching. We are working in a very competitive market and employing a strong sense of value within your organization - whatever you chose those to be - will help you to align your goals, build your growth strategy accordingly and create an environment of collaboration.

With all the advances in technology, employees are virtually accessible anywhere they are, making the idea of a “traditional” brick and mortar office, not obsolete, but not as important than it used to be. Allowing employees to work remotely a few days a week can allow flexibility in their schedules as well as enhance your talent reach. When hiring employees you are now able to expand your search and bring in the best possible fit, regardless of their location. Technology has allowed employers to provide tools necessary to keep their team productive, while still accountable for their time.

Incorporate an element of fun. All work and no play can make for a very boring day. Keeping your team energized and excited to come to work each day will not only brighten your employees day, but their renewed energy will be reflected in their work and imparted onto your clients. Clients who see their business partners passionate and excited about what they are doing, are typically more loyal to those relationships.

Team building days are a fun distraction from the everyday routine, however they aren’t the end all when it comes to creating a good work environment. Showing appreciation for employee contributions, allowing for free-thinking and encouraging creativity all plays a part. Ask for your team’s input when hiring a new employee. Ask for constructive criticisms as to what may be working, what may not be working, and what could be improved when it comes to the business. Remember, they have a huge stake in the success of your business so asking for their input on improving their day-to-day actions, can show you value their insights and will certainly build loyalty among your team.

Overall with the landscape of business constantly evolving, company culture is a great way to set yourself apart from your competition - whether you are competing for new business or recruiting talent. Make sure your culture is speaking volumes about who you are as a business leader and those employees you rely on each day. Remember, a good company culture, isn’t just a once a year annual barbecue. It’s the constant, everyday actions upon which your business model should be founded.
