A QR code (Quick Response code) is defined by Wikipedia as “a specific matrix barcode (or two-dimensional code) that is readable by dedicated QR barcode readers and camera telephones. The code consists of black modules arranged in a square pattern on a white background. The information encoded may be text, URL, or other data.”
QR codes are similar to barcodes used by retailers to track inventory and price products at the point of sale. The big difference between the two is the amount of data they can hold and share.
Bar codes are linear one-dimensional codes and can only hold up to 20 numerical digits. QR codes are two-dimensional matrix barcodes that can hold thousands of alphanumeric characters of information. Their ability to hold a LOT of information and ease of use makes them a VERY useful tool.
How? Consumers want immediate access to relevant information, and QR codes make that possible. QR codes connect people with each other and to multimedia digital content, which makes them very useful for businesses and consumers alike!
