What's a “blog" all about?

"Blog" is an abbreviated version of "weblog," which is a term used to describe web sites that maintain an ongoing chronicle of information. A blog features commentary and links to articles on other Web sites, usually presented as a list of entries in reverse chronological order. Content is the main reason for any web site. Without some sort of updated content, there is little reason to visit a web site more than once.

On a blog, the content consists of articles (also sometimes called ”posts“ or "entries") that the author(s) writes. Wouldn't it be nice if the readers of a website could leave comments, tips or impressions about the site or a specific article? With blogs, they can! Posting comments is one of the most exciting features of blogs. It creates a place for interaction – dialogue – active communication!

Most blogs have a method to allow visitors to leave comments. There are also ways for authors of other blogs to leave comments without even visiting the blog. Called "pingbacks" or "trackbacks", they can inform other bloggers whenever they cite an article from another site in their own articles. All this ensures that online conversations can be maintained painlessly among various site users and websites. All this ensures your website can be found!

How can blogging help my business?

I don’t have time to run a business and maintain a blog at the same time!

I already have a website, so… why should I blog?

A blog complements, not replaces, your company’s website. Blogging is a trend that continues to gain momentum. More and more companies are realizing the benefits of running a blog to supplement their business, along with building awareness and interest from current and potential customers.

Though blogging isn’t necessary or even required for businesses, it can definitely help!

Hubspot based research on their actual customers to see how a blog impacted their business. They used a sample size of 1,531 of their customers, which are primarily small and mid-sized businesses. Roughly half (795) blog and half don’t (736).

Those who blog have:

55% more visitors to their website. Why are website visitors important? Because more visitors means more people to convert to leads and sales.

97% more links to their website, which is a primary factor in where your website shows up in search results. Why are inbound links important? Because they signal authority to search engines, thus increasing your chances of getting found in search engines.

434% more indexed pages, which is the number of pages that show up in search engines. Just because you have a site doesn’t guarantee it is being indexed (findable). Just because some of your pages are in search engines doesn’t mean all of your pages are. Why are indexed pages important? The more pages you have on your site, the better your chances of getting found in search engines.

The data is crystal clear: Companies that blog have far better marketing results. The average company that blogs has:

The more you blog, the more pages Google has to index and the more inbound links you're likely to have. The more pages and inbound links you have, the higher you rank on search engines like Google — thus the greater amount of traffic to your website.
