The explosion of the new social media board Pinterest and the rise of the mobile camera app Instagram have led some to dub 2012 as "The Year of the Image." Images are now everywhere, led in part by Pinterest, where users can use boards to “pin” ideas on, ranging from living room decorating to social media infographics. This has caused a ripple effect across other social media platforms, and with the purchase of Instagram by Facebook, it's only going to get bigger.
Instagram allows the application of "vintage" filters to normal pictures, giving a retro feel to modern images. Both platforms allow sharing back to user's Facebook walls – which helps to keep the visual revolution going.
As the #1 revenue-generating social media platform for businesses, Pinterest is only going to keep getting bigger as more and more people join the movement. And while Pinterest has traditionally been recognized as a female-dominated venue (82%, actually), more and more men are jumping on board and discovering what women have known all along: Pinterest is addicting, fun, and a great way to share insights into our personality with each other.
After all, the 1 of 10 in the world Tron Legacy Lightcycle that I have pinned to my "Stuff I Want Board" would make an excellent anniversary gift, right?
