Did you know…
Twitter has just achieved a major milestone: July 2011 - Its users now send 200 million tweets per day.
Twitter decided to do the math and see how many books could be written with 200 million tweets. According to its calculations, a day’s worth of tweets would be enough to write a 10-million-page book or 8,163 copies of War and Peace. Every second, 2,400 tweets are sent through Twitter’s servers, enough for 1.4 billion tweets per week.
Twitter surpassed 50 million tweets per day less than a year-and-a-half ago, and two years ago, Twitter users sent just 10 million tweets per day.

Twitter adds 5 new users – every second?
Twitter’s latest growth figures show that every day they are adding around 460, 000 users. That’s about 5 new users every second, or 320 every minute. WOW! And that’s not all… more juicy stats here.
Did you know…
Twitter has over 300 million users – and YOU can watch that grow!
At this moment, Twitter has well over 300,000,000 users. Tweetreports offers a phenominal graphic called The Twitter Clock, where you can watch Twitter’s user numbers grow, insanely fast, in real time – just click on the graphic and see for yourself!
Okay…
We realize Twitter may not be taken very seriously by the general public. It’s been said - ‘Twitter is for twits’ - many times.
However…
No matter how it’s perceived, the facts speak volumes for how far it’s come – and how far it may be going - following its humble origins and launch in 2006.
Since then, Twitter has gained immense popularity worldwide and is estimated to have 225 million users (March 2011), generating over 150 million tweets a day and handling over 800,000 search queries a day. Twitter is sometimes described as the "SMS of the Internet" and its 140 character limit keeps the messages short and simple.
Its attraction as a social media web platform is in its rapid, real time messaging that enables breaking news and information to hit the web instantly without filters and censorship.
***Twitter Facts and Figures***
Creation/Launch: 2006
- > Twitter was created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey and launched in July 2006.
- > Twitter was birthed during a “day long brainstorming session” held by the board members of the podcasting company Odeo. While sitting in a park on a children’s slide and eating Mexican food, Dorsey introduced the idea of an individual using an SMS service to communicate with a small group - full story here.
- > The first Twitter prototype was used as an internal service for Odeo employees and the full version was introduced publicly on July 15, 2006.
- > The original project code name for the service was ‘twttr‘, an idea that Williams later ascribed to Noah Glass, inspired by the name of the social media image website ‘Flickr’ and the five-character length of American SMS short codes.
- > The team finally settled on the name ‘twitter‘, which means ‘chirps from birds’; in essence, ‘a short burst of inconsequential information’.
