How to Spot (and Avoid) Bad Social Media Practices

By NOW Marketing Group
Social media bubbles - likes and reactions

In the world of social media, not all content is created equal. There are some clear signs that a social media strategy might be doing more harm than good. Let’s talk about how to spot these pitfalls and how to do social media the right way.

  1. Duplicated, Cookie-Cutter Content
If your posts look exactly like someone else’s—even a competitor’s—because you’re using a company that duplicates the same content for multiple clients, that’s a problem. It doesn’t help you stand out. In fact, it can look bad—especially if customers notice the same posts recycled across different businesses in the same city. People do notice—and they talk.

  2. Lack of Branding Consistency
Your social media should reflect your brand. If your images, fonts, and colors change wildly from post to post, and none of it feels uniquely “you,” then it’s not memorable. Ask yourself: who are you trying to attract if they can’t even recognize your brand at a glance?

  3. Tone-Deaf or Non-Social Content
Social media is called “social” for a reason. If your content doesn’t sound like you’re speaking to real people or inviting a conversation, you’re missing the point. It’s not about just pushing out content for the sake of it. It’s about engaging, building rapport, and creating a genuine dialogue.

The POST Framework: Doing Social Media the Right Way

We recommend following the POST framework to keep your social media authentic and effective:

  • Personalized: Make sure your content feels and sounds like you.

  • Open-ended: Invite conversations rather than just broadcasting messages.

  • Style: Keep your unique branding and tone consistent so people recognize you.

  • Timely: Post about relevant events and engage with your community in real time.

In a world where AI can generate content at the click of a button, the human touch still matters. People can spot generic content from a mile away, and it can actually hurt your engagement. To keep those “dings” of notifications coming, focus on relationships and authenticity.
