Have you ever had a deep passion for something and thought “I wish I could do something more, but I’m only 1 person.” Times have changed my friend and with the help of Change.org YOU can make that difference.
If this is your first time hearing of Change.org their mission is “To empower anyone, anywhere to start, join, and win campaigns for social change. “ In short, Change.org is a social Media platform created to mobilize individuals to support and successfully make a change for the betterment of our society.
The site was launched in 2007 by Ben Rattary to translate his passion for a cause into effective action. Ben says of his company, “people deserve to be part of the decisions being made that affect their lives, so we’ve created a tool that gives them a voice in that conversation. “ Well, Ben achieved just that. Today at Change.org, 15,000 petitions are created monthly–started by people just like you who invite signatures through their e-mail directories and social networks. Change now has over 35 million members in 196 countries and is the fastest-growing social action platform on the web. Need some inspiration? Watch Chelsea Clintons interview on Rock Center with Ben:
While petitions can range from economic and criminal justice, to human rights, education, the environment, animals, health, and sustainable food. The ones that capture the limelight are ones involving humanity. Petitions are the oldest from of advocacy. In todays connected world we have the opportunity to make a difference in a way never imagined. Social media has made it simple to start and spread the campaigns of everyday people. Here’s another example of 1 person making a change:
Bank of America announces after being bailed out by the American public, they're going to add a $5 fee to use your own bank card. And then you got a huge amount of online social media, negative response, but no effective coordination until a 22-year-old part-time nanny, [who] had no history in activism at all, starts a petition, [and] gets 300,000 people to join her. She mobilizes people offline and they pull money out of Bank of America. She's all over the media. And then after a month of campaigning, she gets one of the biggest banks in America to rescind the $5 fee as do all major national banks in response.
So I ask you, how are you going to be the Change you want to see in the world? Share with us what you want to see change! We would love to hear from you!
