The Cost of Video Production

Many factors come into play when talking about the cost of professional video production. One of the biggest ones is your budget. We live in a time when pretty much anything is possible, but unless you are a large national brand, you might not have the financial backing to turn your dream into a reality. That is not to say you can’t create advertising that will rival your national competitors.

The first step is to work with a solid team to concept an idea that is doable on your budget. Also, just because you have an idea doesn’t mean it’s a good one. You should listen to the professionals and follow their advice (but that’s a topic for another blog post). They will work with you on what is (and is not) possible.

First, let’s look at WHY the cost is what it is and what it takes to make a professional video happen. In the beginning, there are meetings -- maybe on the phone, and maybe in person. You’ll talk about ideas and potential shoot dates. You may go back and forth for awhile nailing down scripts, locations, and on-screen talent. Once the idea and script are solidified, it moves into pre-production. During pre-production, the video team will go over logistics for the shoot day, timelines, storyboards, shot lists, gear lists and anything else needing to happen. Will the crew already have the gear needed or will additional items need to be rented? Does any furniture need to be rented to dress a set?

Now you know the WHY, so let’s discuss the numbers. In most demographics, you will be looking at a per hour price ranging from $50-$250. Why such a wide range? As is the case with many professions, you get what you pay for. A college student or recent graduate who hasn’t had any “real world” jobs might charge the lower range. He or she may not have very good (or any) equipment and might not anticipate problems that could arise on the shoot or during the edit. At the higher end of the spectrum, you might be working with a team of more experienced people or with an individual who is just REALLY good at what they do. You should be leery of working with anyone who's price is too low or who doesn't have a solid body of work.

A good average price to expect for a completed video is around $500-$1,000. As I mentioned earlier, there are a lot of things to consider when it comes to making a professional video, but this should give you a ballpark idea.
