Gone are the days where we drove down the road, just waiting for the next billboard advertisement to excite us. Can you believe people used to look forward to the commercial break? More people are choosing Netflix over television or cable, and more people completely ignore billboards.

Instead, social media is becoming an important facet of everyday life. If you’re not using social media marketing, you should be! The eyes that were once hooked to commercials on TV or billboards during a long drive are now on social media.

Here are some tips on how to use social media to your advantage.

Find your voice

Find your tone of voice and stick with it. Do you want to be funny, serious, or in between? Think about what you would want to see when following a similar business. What kind of voice goes with the industry you’re in? Finding your voice displays who you are as a business and what you want people to know about your business.

Be Creative

What do you want to be known for? Find a creative side, and put a mark on every photo or post you create. You want to make the person scrolling through their feed think, “Yes, that photo is from [insert business name here], I can tell because of their unique posts.” Distinguish your posts from your competition. Make your creative side stand out for what you want your company to be known for. Display what you do best!

Engagement

Ask questions and get people engaged with what you’re saying. Be clear with what you’re asking from your audience. Interact with other social profiles, share their content, tag them in your posts. Feature their content. You want to spend two times more engaging with others than posting your own content.

Educate

You are the expert in your industry, so educate others about your industry. You’ll also want to keep up with trends are changing in social media. Stay one step ahead by continuing to educate you and your team.

Don’t be annoying

The last thing you want to do is to scare off current or potential customers from following. No one wants to see sales posts that are constantly saying, “buy, buy buy!” Remember, social media is social. Think about posts from a potential customer’s point of view. What would you want to see posted that would actually interest you to like or follow a business on social media?

Entertain

People are on social media to be entertained, whether is it to look at cool photos, watch funny videos, or engaged with others.

Promotions

Run special promotions to get people involved with your social media accounts, by posting promotions through social media. Offer special deals to people who either show or type in a certain code.

Content

Make sure your content follows the 4 E’s: Educate, entertain, engage and be the expert in your field.
